Bidding farewell to their hometown for good, 499 villagers in centralChina's Hubei Province left their homes Wednesday morning, becoming the firstgroup to relocate to make way for China's South-North Water Diversion Project(SNWD).

上周三早晨，湖北省的499位村民告别自己的家乡成为第一批为南水北调工程外迁的移民。

上文中的South-North Water DiversionProject就是“南水北调工程”，简写为SNWD，是通过跨流域的水资源合理配置，大大缓解我国北方drought-pronecities(缺水城市)水资源严重短缺的问题。

这里的persion为“转移;分出支流”的意思，平时还可以做“娱乐、消遣”来用，比如：Golf is my father's favoritepersion. (高尔夫球是我爸最喜欢的消遣项目。)

Their journey was the starting point for the nation's largest relocationprogram after that of the Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project, which involved therelocation of 1.27 million.

这次外迁开启了三峡水利工程移民后我国规模最大的`一次移民外迁项目，当年三峡移民的总人数为127万。

这里的relocation program就是“移民外迁项目”，也就是locate the villagers to anotherplace。据说所有的relocatee(移民)在未来20年都会受到government subsidies(政府补助)，同时还有one-offcompensation payment(一次性补偿金)。
